Information on US Supplemental Medicare Plans

For All Members with ADB Health Insurance and Medicare:BPMSD's consultant and former staff Bill Silverman explains how supplemental medicare plans work with ADB insurance and Medicare:A “Supplemental Medicare" (SM) plan, also known as Medicare Part C, does not affect your reimbursement of Medicare premiums by ADB. More and more ADB retirees are enrolling in these plans to fill the gaps in coverage of the PRGMIP – dental for example. And the price of these plans can be quite reasonable, and the location of services is often very convenient. In terms of claims, it is not likely to be possible to alter the position of insurers for a claim in the US. There are all kinds of rules in place. Basically, for two coverages, the order is Medicare à ADB Cigna. If you enroll in the SM plan, then the order will be Medicare à SM à Cigna.Of course, in theSM scenario, there will be things that any one, two, or three of the insurers will not cover. Examples include

  • No insurer will cover cosmetic surgery.
  • ADB will not cover dentistry.
  • Medicare will not cover hearing aids (not sure about SMs).
  • Medicare and SMs will not cover Chinese Traditional Medicine.

In most cases, the Part C plans (SM plans) only apply when you use the SM plan’s provider network. So if you needed to see a doctor outside the SM plan's coverage area, and the SM had no affiliates in your location, the order would revert to Medicare à Cigna.
